Canon or Sony

I'm thinking about getting back into the video life.  I've aways bought Sony cams but I have recently been impressed with Canon products in general.  So the following (almost impossible question to answer)...What's a very good, small, HD, easy to use cam that can be housed in a small easy to travel housing?  $$$ is not the most important factor.

Welcoming all suggestions!!!

TedJ

PS  I hope BarbaraJ doesn't see this.

Ted,

Have not been paying much attention to the specs of new models.  Best I can tell you is that the new prosumer models will be way better than you are used to seeing.  Canon may not have the best low light capabilities versus Sony, but it is hard to find good side by side comparisons.  My suggestion is to set a budget, then test drive a couple of models.  As far as size goes, most of the newer models with a flash drive, and many with tape, are puny compared with models a couple of years ago.  One thing that might push you towards Canon is their image stabilization system.

Keep us informed on your hunt.

small and easy to travel????  I think that is your hard part to find.
Seatool makes the smallest ones but they are $$$.  I think they only make them for Sony, too.
There is a new Flip HD camcorder that is tiny and Ikelite makes a housing for it.  I have seen some video with it but I am not overly impressed.  It is good, but don't know if it is what you are looking for.

As far as Canon HD vs. Sony HD........ I switched to Canon this year when I upgraded and I am very happy with it.  I have an Ikelite housing, not small but not huge either.

Thanks papa and Rnr,
I'm just starting to tiptoe in again.  Still have my Warren rig but it just takes up so much space.
I'll keep up the hunt.

Well Warren seems to have closed down shop so you wouldn't even be able to have him modify your housing.  SeaTool's rig is about the smallest you are going to find that I know of at present, but you might want to give Ryan/Tio a call.

Is this scary or what? Me answering video questions.

The Canon S10 has a couple of nice features that set it apart from the Sony counterparts, but to my knowledge, Light & Motion's Bluefin C is the only housing for it.

It allows access to the complete camera menu system via the handles, including one-touch white balance. No reaching for and fiddling with the buttons on the side of the housing to adjust white balance or anything else on the camera. Also, the Canon lets you limit gain (to control noise in low light conditions), which the Sony does not.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Ikelite does offer a housing for that one, but I don't know how easy it is to access everything.

It may be scary for you to answer questions on video but it's even scarier for me to be asking them!!!
And it will be scarier still if BJ finds out.

I was looking at the S10 and S11 but I was also impressed by the seatool housings.

Now I'm looking at the Canon HF20 and the Canon housing.  Best Buy had the camera on sale for an instant yesterday for $499 and I can get the housing for $399.  I know it's neither the latest nor the best but is there anything seriously wrong with the combination.  I'm just kind of starting again, partly because the Mac iMovie software is so easy to use.

Ted,

Seriously wrong?  Doubt it.  Biggest issues with the camera seems to have been its price and relatively poor low light capabilities.  A housing is a housing if it keeps the camera dry.  Biggest issues will be access to controls (really all you want rec/stop and WB) and red filter.  Since you're starting out, lights are not an issues.  You may find that the small housing makes it more difficult to hold steady for a shot.

Thanks again papa,
I still have my old USVH housing  - the T-9 I think, for the old first run digital Sony with tapes.  But I only took it diving once or twice and then gave up because of the editing.  I doubt if the LANC hookup would work with the newer cameras.
Can't decide whether to spend $900 or $2500+

the Lanc won't work which is too bad since you still have the housing.  I'd say that this camera's quality will exceed anything you had before.  Editing is still editing even though iMovie is easier to use than some programs.  I'd go with the the $900 until you're sure you want to get back into UW video.

Thanks for the LANC info.  That completely ruled out the T-9.  So I jumped for the HF20.  Even thought the Best Buy site indicated that they were sold out both online and in stores (the price for the camera was at least $125 less than anywhere else), I got a very nice young man to help me.  They do not issue "rain checks" but he offered to check other local stores (nothing) and then offered to order it for me at the $499 price.  I did, actually BarbaraJ did as it's a Xmas present for me.  Came home and newegg had the housing for $399, she she ordered that too.

I figure it's a small price to pay to see if I have the knack for editing now that the software is easier to deal with.
Thanks again for your time and thoughts.

Should have been a bit more clear.  This Canon does not have a Lanc input.  Second, I'm not sure the command module circuitry on the T-9 is proprietary to Sony or is universal.
