Bahamas Shark Trip

I had a incredible week of diving with Eric Chengs' group last week on Jim Abernathy's boat in the Bahamas....

I had my first housing flood and lost a D70/Sigma 15, but I had a backup body and 12-24mm lens so all wasn't lost. My Ike housing flooded through one of the tray connection bolts on the bottom of the housing...very rare....

The good news from the trip had to do with Ike's new large dome....with the long extension, it worked very, very well with the 12-24....the shots below were taken with that combo....unfortunately, I don't have many results from the 15mm

From a Shark's perspective

Manual 1/100 @ f6.3 12-24mm @ 12mm

James Wiseman with a Lemon Shark

Manual 1/160 @ f14 12-24mm @ 24mm

Tiger Shark

Aperture Priority 1/320 @ f11 12-24mm @ 24mm

Caribbean Reef Shark

Manual 1/200 @ f10 12-24mm @ 12mm

Jim Abernathy with a very large Tiger Shark

Manual 1/250 @ f13 15mm

I hope to have more photos on my website soon

is that another lemon in the left hand background on the first tiger shot? How often did you have multiple species in the chum at the same time? Cool shots indeed.

Kark, nice stuff! I was wondering if you were going to share with us!

Can you elaborate on the cause of the flood? Was a mounting bolt inserted too far? What?

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Thanks for the nice comments guys....makes jumping into shark infested waters worth it

Rick.......insurance on the camera.....not on the lens  I just got the lens and forgot to add it to my policy.....bummer, especially since I really did like the Sigma 15mm.....it will definitely be replaced

Isurus....yes, that is a lemon in the background....we typically had 5 to 8 sharks per dive

mdshope.....added EXIF to photos

Mike.....you mentioned before that you would buy the Sigma 15 from me if I didn't like it......offer still good?

Tio......of course I was going to share    ......the tray connection on the Ike housing is a through bolt assembly....the head is captive on the exterior of the housing and the nut is secured on the inside of the housing and then surrounded by a rubber gasket that should prevent it from turning....there shouldn't be any way for the nut to come loose, but s**t happens.....this is the second flood like this that I've heard of....Detonate had the same flood while in Australia last year.....I would suggest that folks cross the nut/bolt inside their housing with a magic marker and check it before each trip to make sure nothing has moved ;

Great shots Karl. Sorry to hear about the flood. I'm particularly interested in this, as I've just bought a D70, and am considering housings at the moment. Do you think the Ike is a decent option?

I'm also interested because I'm hoping to be on that shark trip next year. Did you see any great hammerheads, or were you on a different trip? I presume you'd recommend the trip?

Cheers,

David
