Suggestion Box / Wish List

There have been several ideas floated on the forum lately about ways to improve Digital Diver. At the risk of ruining my reputation as a dictatorial web despot, I actually listen to your suggestions.
Current projects include:
- A digital glossary - I even thought of a profile setting for 'newbie/expert', where if a member selected newbie, they would see popup definitions of glossary words contained in a post. I'm not sure about that one yet. Blame it on Duncan for getting me to thinking pre-caffiene.
- A PS reference database - Bev volunteered to help populate this one. It will include printed publications, web sites, DVD based training, and live training resources
- A beginners board on the forum
- A FAQ database, culled from posts on the forum
I'm not promising a timetable for any of these, but they are in the hopper.
Anyway, here's one for your feedback. Much like the 'Rig' profile, I thought it might be nice to have an 'awards' profile for members where they can list achievements like contest wins, publication, D2D POTW, etc. Maybe this is one for a poll.
Anyway, post your suggestions for the site here, and we'll air them out.

Undecided - We would still need gracious members (and spouses ) to post and let us know when somebody won something

OK I'll stick my head above the parapet. On a similar vein to the wins/publications profile, I keep hearing about how people are winning competitions I've not heard of. Now I doubt I would enter any/many of these and if I did I doubt I got the shots/skills to claim any prizes but this got me thinking how about a competitions database?
I will obviously hang my head in shame if anyone points out that there is already one stashed somewhere about the site.
also I think there was some time ago a notion of a DDnet code of conduct for photographers on interacting with marine life - can't remember where we came out on this but I'd like to see something on those lines as a guide for beginners.
|
|
I second both of these suggestions. We could use a "hippocratic oath" for u/w photographers.
I was actually going to post the same suggestion about competitions. I really would like to know what's happening in the world of competitions. Could we have a spot with links for these, like the trip finder page?
I don't know how to quote more than once here, so I will just add I'm in favor of FAQ page, a digital glossary, and the PS reference. Not sure I want the Beginner's Board, but so be it if that's how the poll turns out.

# A digital glossary Yes
# A PS reference database Yes
# A FAQ database, culled from posts on the forum Yes
# A beginners board on the forum I'd have a poll for this one.
# an 'awards' profile for members We'd all need access there, few members announce their awards themselves, usually it's another member starting with congratulations.
# a Code of Conduct Yes, why not
# a competitions database Yes

| No - There is something about having a "separate" area for beginners that I don't like. However, I am always in favor of having a more welcoming environment for beginners. That was the initial feeling of DigitalDiver and I believe Richard has done a fabulous job in maintaining that open-arms attitude.
I don't know what happens when you join up as a member here at DDN, but I assume that there is some sort of email letter that arrives as a welcome. Maybe, in that letter, a link could be there for everyone including beginners. That link might take them to a page here at DDN that would point to Keyword searches (something already loaded in the search engine since it is not the most user-friendly one around. Or maybe it is just me... ) , the FAQ database, the digital glossary, the PS reference database, the strobe finder, maybe a camera/housing option page, or whatever. What I am doing a horrible job of saying is that instead of isolating the beginners...there must be some way to welcome them, show them how much information can be found on this site, allow them to feel at ease here, and help them to join in the forums with everyone else.
I mean a new photographer may want information re: cameras, housings, strobes, flash cards, critter ID, Photoshop, video or a camera friendly dive shop in Cozumel. Does that mean they have to go to a beginners forum to post those questions?
Maybe, instead of a Beginners forum being devoted to new underwater photographers, it should be devoted to DigitalDiver.net beginners (and veterans alike). I think what can help folks be less intimidated about posting to the forum is when they know how to use the forum. Helpful hints are posted in stickies all around, but maybe having them in a concentrated area would also be useful. Threads might included something like, How To Post to a Thread, How to Post a Photo (Attach, Deep Link), Why Does the Search Engine Hate Me, No One Answered My Question, Why?-Tips to Posting a Question, Need Tech Help, etc. Kind of like what the Admin forum had going on there for a while.
So now that I have stepped in it big time ... I might as well keep going... I would also like to make a suggestion but I don't know if it is even possible. Does this website software have the option of adding more smiley options? A clapping smiley would sure come in handy for the show off section. Also, just having the option of more smilies might help clarify the written word a bit. I really think a sarcasm smiley or sarcasm quotes (whatever the heck that would be) could REALLY be useful!
I don't even want to think about how many new posts there are in this thread since I started this reply. It has taken me way too long to write this post... and even longer to push the "Post" button. [sarcasm]However, since this a friendly underwater photo board... be nice! [/sarcasm]

I like it
Yes. Although, I’m still not clear on whether I actually volunteered or got hood-winked
I’ll go with general consensus.
Yes
On the fence. Sabine has an excellent point.
Yes. I could see merging this with Mike’s suggestion of an ecological board.
A lot of great suggestions being offered here, but I'm beginning to see where this could get out of control. Maybe sub-forums in the Diver’s Deck in lieu of the above I noticed you’re doing this just before you get out of Dodge, Tio
Ouch, Richard…stop throwing things

yes, and the more hoodwinking of Bev the better
no, but I'd like to see a robust FAQ on each of the major boards in cameras, strobes, after the dive, which would aleviate the need for such a board. Something linking to past discussions of note on the various, well, frequently asked questions. ::: edited to add ::: oops, and of course moving pixels, too, for the FAQ. How could I forget our darksiders?

No, this will likely become too much of a political debate, and we don't seem to play nicely there.

Here I go again...
No, this will likely become too much of a political debate, and we don't seem to play nicely there.
|
|
What could be wrong with discussing legislation that affects what we care so much about. There's a huge difference between discussing why you like or dislike Bush or Kerry or Democrats, or who's gonna win the next election, and really discussing issues about the ocean. I've been a member here for quite a while and I think one of the better aspects of this forum is the maturity of the group as a whole. We do play nice and I think we should give ourselves enuf credit to allow discussions that we may not all agree with. No one would be forced to join in. I have had discussions with other members here on issues that are important and we have often disagreed, but we still have been able to learn from each other and know when to agree to disagree. A discussion with BrantD comes to mind. We discussed fishing practices. We didn’t agree on all aspects but we both wanted the same results. I learned some things from him and I believe he learned a few things from me. Others jumped in and we all learned a little more. I must not have made him too mad, he bought a camera from me later.
I would shy away from personal politics here because that’s not the point of this forum. But if we can have long worn out discussions on whether Macs or PCs are better, we certainly should be able to have an intelligent discussion about the merits of a bill that would help eliminate shark finning. If there is something pending that is controversial, what better place is there to learn more facts than from a large group of people that care about the subject?
I would venture a guess that there is a 99% agreement here on most ecological issues. Let’s discuss the rest without fear of “talking politics.” Let’s learn from each other and research the facts together and maybe we can do some good toward the big picture. Not taking pictures of puffed puffers is good and a code of conduct is important, but protecting cold water corals in Alaska is more important. That was just accomplished by concerned people discussing the issue and doing something about it. We can do both!
What is the worst that could happen? Somebody say's that something is the Democrats fault? Big deal. What's the best that could happen? We could do our part to saving the world. I think it's worth the risk. MHO of course.
