Just a FYI for new members, about how to include pictures in a message or a reply. There are two ways to include a picture in a post.

If you picture is already on a publicly available web server (i.e. your personal web site):

  • Click the  'Insert Image' button in the bottom row of YABBC tags in the message composition window.

  • This button will insert the following into your message:
    Code:
    [img]URL[/img]

  • Then simply replace the 'URL' with the actual url of you image on the internet, i.e.
    Code:
    [img]http://www.mywebserver.com/images/greatpicture.jpg[/img]

If your image is not on a web server:
  • Use the 'Attach' feature at the bottom of the message composition window:

  • Click 'Browse' to find the image on your computer.

  • Then post your message, and the image will be uploaded to our server. As a courtesey to dial-up users, and to help conserve our resources, there is a size limitation of 640x480 pixels and/or 100k for uploaded images.

Happy Posting!

Tio,  I noticed someone a couple of days ago had the same experience I have every time I post a picture.  In the initial post, I browse and post, but no picture appears.  If I then edit the post, browse and save, I get the picture.  This is very consistent for me.  I am behind a firewall, but now I see some others are having a similar experience.

A known issue occurs if you browse to attach a picture, then try to preview the post, then post.

If you notice the attach field is blank when you preview, and of course the picture is not in the preview, because it has not been uploaded to the server yet.

Using the forum search function

By popular request, here are a few tips that will help you use the search function to better advantage. There are three fields that are critical to finding what you're looking for on the forum:

The 'Search for:' field of course. You may have to adjust your search if you don't find what you're looking for the first time. Logically, searching for 'Adobe' will return more results than 'Adobe Photoshop'. So try adjusting your search parameters to control the results you're looking for.

If you are sure of the exact term, use that term to limit the results that you have to wade through. If you don't find what you need, be less specific in your search, or try variations in spelling, hyphenation etc. The search engine is NOT CASE SENSITIVE, so case has no effect on the results.

The second (and possibly most critical) element in a successful search is the 'Max Age since last post:' field. The forum opened in October, 2002, so if you suspect that the post you're searching for is older than 60 days, setting this field is mandatory. Otherwise, you will only see results going back 60 days (the default).

The third critical field is the 'Display how many results?' field. Particularly if you've adjusted the Max age field you may need to adjust this field. As you search further back in time your search will logically return more results, so leaving this field set at 50 may cause your search to be chopped off at 50 results, overriding the Max age setting.

If you are certain about which board a post is NOT in, un-checking the non relevant boards will speed your search and limit the results, but be aware, quite often what you are looking for is not where you would expect it to be. Threads often go off topic in the strangest permutations!

You will note that I've struck out the 'by user' field. I've found this field to be of limited use, but have found a much better way to find a post by a specific user.

Go to that user's profile by:
  • Clicking on their name in any post or post listing
  • Clicking Member List near the bottom of the main forum page, and browsing to that member's profile

Near the bottom of the Member Profile, there is a section like this:

Set the drop down box to the number of posts you wish to see and click 'Go'.

Hope this helps... happy searching!

Hints about posting questions

Digital Diver Network has evolved into the information machne that it is today through the hard work of not only the administrators and moderators, but of hundreds of members who answer questions every day.

If you are new to the forum, (or not so new), we urge you to try searching for the answers to your questions before you post. Quite often your question may have been answered several times in the past. Click here for help in searching.

If you do post a question, please be patient. Some members don't visit the forum every day, so it may be several days before you get a reply.

If you don't get a reply, it's not because you are a noobie or a stranger, it's because no one who has read your question knows the answer, or feels that they are knowledgible enough about the topic to reply.

Often, members will read a post and think to themselves that they need to research the answer at home where they can look at their camera (strobe, housing, software, etc.)  Then life gets in the way... and it slips their mind. With generally a hundred or more post each day, a topic can get buried pretty quickly.

After a couple of days without an answer to your question, post a reply to your own question with something like 'Anybody?'. This will bring your post back to the top of the board, and jog those lethargic neurons.

Everyone is welcome here, and you won't find a friendlier group on land or sea. And.....the only question that is stupid, is the one that isn't asked.

  1) I log on and do my thing of reading etc and then reply taking more time than I imagined, of course.  then I post,  But the tells me to log on again.  OK fine.  But alas my composed and considered reply and questions are gone!!
ARRGGH!! and no time to recompose.  This has happened twice.  and yet I have gotten thorugh twice but recomposing is really a drag.

When you log in (unless you're using the computer at the library or other publicly shared computer), select the 'Remember me next time' box.  That way the cookie won't expire in 60 minutes.

Alternately, you can set the 'Session length' to a higher number when you log in.

As a last resort, you can compose your masterpiece in Wordpad or some other text editor, then copy/paste it into the message box.

If that cat is not skinless by now....

2)the tag line greets me when I log on very nicely but it claims no one has responded to me .  But when I go to the forum threads--lo and behold halleleua, I am not unheard.  No big thing, since I like to read the treads anyway and will guickly discover I've 'got mail'.  Yet is there an explanation?

The tag line refers to IM's (instant messages), not to replies to your posts. To see a list of all unread posts, use the 'New' button (sunburst) at the top of the page. That will significantly speed up the task of keeping current.

You can also use the 'Notify' button at the bottom of each thread to turn on email notification when someone replies to that thread.

And, when you post or reply to a thread, there is a checkbox to enable notification. Note: Either of these options can get very annoying very quick for a busy thread!

  3) Yesterday i wanted to get 'educated about strobes and went to one of the home grown articles you feature (not on the forum but in the DDN) and it loaded and reloaded over and over without a word on the screen, but claiming "Done" for 5 minutes and locked the program.  Needless to say I v'e not gone near it since.  Do you know what is going on?

I can't address this without knowing which article that you tried to read, but just hazarding a guess, if it was Jeff's strobe shootout article, it is a PDF document requiring the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin. Even if you already have Acrobat installed, I would recommend updating it with a fresh version:

...New question: How to make those nice light blue boxes that quote previous others to mke communication work well without retyping and clearly differentiate previous comments...

To quote a post in your reply, use the button. It will automatically put the previous thread in a quote box, including any quotes within the post that you are quoting.

You can then delete irrelevant portons of the quote for brevity and clarity, generally denoted by '...'

If you want to quote from several different posts individually, you can copy the text you want to quote, then paste it into your reply. Then highlight it in your reply, click the button to put it in a quote box...

Easy huh?

Inquiring minds want to know, are you actually a doctor or are you a Star Trek fan?
