FWIW, IMHO, YMMV, etc ... I believe Mike is right -- we shouldn't be afraid to discuss issues that directly impact the oceans we swim in or the air we breath. Most of the time we can be civil even when we disagree with another person's point of view -- Bruce and the spearfisher excepted, of course, but the pig whose lights he punched out isn't a member here so I don't think that counts.
OTOH ... I'm not certain a separate board is the right way to go. We had a "Hall of Shame" for a brief period, but there was only one person in it. I can't help wondering if a separate Ecology Issues board would attract readers and participants or not -- part of me thinks a lot of people would just hit "mark as read" on that board, where they might join in if they landed in an eco-oriented thread without realising it.

personally speaking.... I don't believe we need to add another bunch of boards for every topic that is mentioned. I personally would like to see a section (like the software links type of section) of current competitions that are accepting entries (from a multitude of places I only hear about when the winners are announced here), perhaps instead of a beginners section (as mentioned previously) a pinned FAQ at the top of each board that answers the vast majority of beginner type stuff, Ecological board?... how about using "Dive Deck" for this as has been done (quite successfully) in the past? Glossary?, maybe pinned too!, or with reference tools.. I think it was Richard that mentioned it earlier, this place is great as there aren't 10's of forums to wade through for every conceivable variation on a theme.
lets keep it simple - with a few well thought out changes, even more can be gained from this fantastic community

selected text wrapped by tags when clicking a YABBC button
|
|
what browser are you using? If I'm remembering this correctly, this is how IE6 functions. Firefox behaves differently -- always throwing the inserted tags at the end of text regardless the position of the text cursor when you click the tag button (or smiley button)
<edit: okay, fine ... go right ahead and change your post while I'm composing an answer to the first version >

sorry duncan I first tried using the checkbox for "Check this if you'll be adding code", but the code was still interpreted. Your reply is still relevant, no? I tend to use mozilla. Tags always end up at the bottom of the post.

what I wrote stands; over time I developed the following workflow for links ...
(note: I use the < > brackets to represent the square ones in this)
- click the WWW button to get <url></url> inserted into the message - highlight the URL (I usually have it open in the top bar of another tab/window) - Ctrl C - back in the message window, click the cursor here <url ^ ></url> codes - type in the = and then Ctrl V - right arrow one character, putting the cursor here <url=http:/xxxxx> ^ </url> - Ctrl C again
Not as easy for the user as having Tio program your request, but really not so complicated is it?

There have been several ideas floated on the forum lately about ways to improve Digital Diver. At the risk of ruining my reputation as a dictatorial web despot, I actually listen to your suggestions.
Current projects include:
- A digital glossary - I even thought of a profile setting for 'newbie/expert', where if a member selected newbie, they would see popup definitions of glossary words contained in a post. I'm not sure about that one yet. Blame it on Duncan for getting me to thinking pre-caffiene.
- A PS reference database - Bev volunteered to help populate this one. It will include printed publications, web sites, DVD based training, and live training resources
- A beginners board on the forum
- A FAQ database, culled from posts on the forum
I'm not promising a timetable for any of these, but they are in the hopper.
Anyway, here's one for your feedback. Much like the 'Rig' profile, I thought it might be nice to have an 'awards' profile for members where they can list achievements like contest wins, publication, D2D POTW, etc. Maybe this is one for a poll.
Anyway, post your suggestions for the site here, and we'll air them out.

I agree with 1, 2 and especially 4. But I'm against a seperate newbie forum. Here's why....
I don't generally compare message boards but I think it's pertinent to do so here. As some of you know I'm a Supervisor on Scubaboard. I've been on that board since it started and spent several years as a moderator before moving to super. Over the years and continuing with new ownership, in an effort to make things clearer and easier to find, more and more forums have been added. It has now become a writhing behemouth that folks either love or hate, requiring alot of work from the voluntary moderators as well as the members. With each added forum, more members are taken away from the main core forum, as each member finds the few forums they prefer. It sort of unintenionally promotes segregating everyone. Now that can be a good thing if you only want to read about certain things. However, since this whole board is already dedicated to photography, I think we all learn more than we ever expect to just by reading so many threads on so many subjects. For instance, I've always shied away from technical computer stuff. But through reading posts on here I've discovered things I never knew were possible to do with computers and got the knowledge from you all to make decisions to improve my system. I'd never learned any of that if I had to go to a seperate forum dedicated to 'Computers and photography' because I wouldn't have had any interest in it.
The Beginner forums I see serve as a good place to welcome newbies and for them to introduce themselves. DDN was formed when I was still a rank digital beginner and to be honest, I didn't know enough to know how much I didn't know! I don't think most beginners know what questions to ask. That's evidenced in the numerous "What is a good camera for a beginner?" questions frequently posted. By segregating them into their own forum, I'm always concerned that they'll forever feel like a newbie and hesitate to post with the 'experienced' photographers elsewhere on the board. It delays their inclusion into the total family feel of this board. That one major thing that Scubaboard has lost. Also the 'experienced' members have to make a point to go to the newbie board to answer questions and it's easier to miss a request for help.
I think we already have enough forums here and a seperate one for newbies would do them and us a dis-service.

Very good points Dee! I agree that a beginner forum is not a good idea for all of the reasons Dee says, plus what ever Richorn said that was similar of course.
And I would also add the question, "what is a beginner?" There are people that are new to digital but have been shooting f#&m long enuf to show most of us a trick or two. There are people that are new to shooting UW but know more about light and lenses than most. Some people know a lot about cameras and housings, but have never opened Photoshop. Etc., etc., etc.....
I know I am a total beginner at some aspects of this wide range of subjects that encompass our hobby, yet I feel I am qualified to teach some other aspects to those that need it. I think most of us are in that situation. So, in that sense, the whole forum is a beginner board. I could be wrong but I doubt it.
