My brother and I are off for Bunaken and Lembeh - at the Santika Hotel 10-17 September, Lembeh resort 18-23.  Anyone going to be there? If so, email me - would love to meet up with some other digital divers!  My first major trip shooting digital - finally switching over from f **m.  Starting to practice in the pool to get used to the camera underwater - 7 weeks and counting

This is my first trip to Indonesia (moved to Seattle from Dallas - so decided to try the Pacific instead of the Caribbean); any must see sights/dive spots (we are planning 5 days in Bunaken, 2 days Bangka, 4 days Lembeh)?  Places to avoid?  Also - we have a 20 hour layover in Singapore on the way down - any recommendations on things to do/see in Singapore?

We'll arrive in back Lembeh on the 29th September for another 10 day liveaboard, so unfortunately we will miss you by a week
You'll love the new Lembeh Resort - Very nice. However, I would divert time away from Bunaken onto Lembeh (2+6).
WE LOVE BANGKA too, it ROCKS!

You can contact some of our Singapore members in order to capitalise on the delights of Singapore - Superb city and great shopping gives you chance to meet up for a photoconversation over a coffee.

If anyone is interrested to dive in Lembeh street I would advise to check
divers lodge lembeh. It is a small friendly resort, with just a few cabins but nice ones, two boats who are spacious and definately the nicest in lembeh street, very camera friendly diving with maximum two divers per diveguide.
Then check also the rates because the resort is a lot cheaper then the others but will give you same or better service!

We have an option to take boat rides from the Santika (like a 20 dollar surcharge, so not too bad), or just move to a resort for 2 or 3 days on Bangka (we are a little hesitant to stay there, no AC - and I have a hard time sleeping if I am hot).  Is it a long/rough boat ride to Bangka from the Bunaken area - understand it is like an hour ride?

I did the dive trip from Santika to Bangka back in April 2002.  It was a 3-tank day trip.  The packed lunch was served ashore.

I seem to recall it was at least an hour ride in a speed boat.  Depending on your tolerance for such things, unless the sea is like glass, you can expect it to be a fairly rough ride in the speed boat.  We headed out to Bangka in a rain squall and it was quite rough.  I've still got a scar to prove it.    Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to do the boat trip again.

The diving was great, and on the trip back, we saw a Manta breach the surface, which is something I didn't know they did.

I hope this helps.

Resorts are ok if you want a limited experience, but in my humble professional experience the only way to get the full potential out of Bunaken, Bangka & Lembeh is by liveaboard.

Getting a cheap resort and diving is really a monumental brainfart because when you work out how many underwater minutes you get for your dollars the liveaboard wins hands down. Plus you get to the extreme sites in relative comfort and get all your food cooked fresh instead of  prepacked indigestion.
Above all - No rush and no time limits based on getting back to a distant resort before dark.

Well, maybe I am brainfarting but I personally do not have the experience of a live-aboard. So like me there will be plenty of people who will stay in a resort and then hop on to the next one.
And then if you have to choose I prefer to stay In a place with good service and with good prices. I just wanted to make 2 dives a day but made them about 90 minutes each, so that is a good 3 hours a day. And then still I could go for a nightdive.
And then as a photographer I like the idea of two divers per guide. I met sometimes the other boats in the lembeh street and met their pack of divers under water.

but I will try the live-aboard!

Cheers

Moot point if the dive resort is 5 mins by boat from the action
