okay, we are about 6 weeks out from our 1 week trip to Palau on the Big Blue Explorer.  So what tips can everyone give me about shooting video there?  Which dives are particularly amazing for video? I have batteries and tapes galore, anything else special I need?  How about for still pics for Ron?  Any special dive that stands out in your mind for "shooting til your fingers bleed?"  Being on a liveaboard which has 27 dives scheduled, I know we will hit all the great dives at least once.  Everyone tells us we gotta do Blue Corner at least once as some days nothing happens.  Anyone have any other sage advice for us??

thanks!!!

For the mandarin fish you will want a light since the dive starts at dusk.  In a pinch you can use a very strong dive light if you don't want to spend the bucks for a system.  Blue Corner is going to be difficult because of the ripping current...good luck, get as close to the point/corner as possible so you can get the sharks head on.  Jellyfish Lake is snorkle only.  I found you can get great shots by taking the filter off and holding the housing around your waist and tilted up so you can get the sun.

thanks papa!  Did you find most dives too deep to get decent color (since I don't have lights)?

I am very excited about seeing the sharks, but that's mostly for Ron, I want to see my first anemone fish, manta, cuttlefish, lionfish, mandarin fish, etc.  We are both really excited about the blue holes and WWII wrecks, too.  Palau has such a great variety of diving!  I think I will be able to get some great video footage over the week, with or without Blue Corner.

I may end up only taking the video rig in the water half the time if the currents are ripping.  I have had to fight current "dragging that anchor" and it isn't fun.  With my injury in Calif still healing (it gets sore after execise still) I will leave it on the boat if I need to without any guilt.  This trip is waaaaay too expensive for that.

The water was quite nice and if no clouds, I was getting decent shots below 60 fsw.

Looking for places to stay in Palau on a somewhat short stay after going to Yap.  Looks like with flights we will have 4-5 days on Palau.

Based on the research I did and recommendations I received when we were planning a trip to Palau (which we still hope to do, just not when we had hoped to go) ~ ~ I would suggest looking into booking through Sam's Tours http://www.samstours.com/ and staying at Carolines Resort http://www.carolinesresort.com/ (has free access to use the facilities at Palau Pacific Resort).  An alternative would be the Cliffside Hotel http://www.cliffsidehotelpalau.com/.

Have fun and don't forget to post a trip report

After my fabulous holiday in Fiji in 2008 on the Naia, I've decided to join Sonia, who was the dive director at the time, on a two week dive holiday in the Solomon Islands on the Bilikiki.
Anyone been on this boat? Any comments about the diving here?

thanks

Eleanor

In Palau the must dives are Ulong channel, Blue Hole and the Wall.
