thanks Jack and Nancy!  Good info, doesn't look like we can go wrong regardless of which resort we choose.

Jack -
is Kai Viti Divers at Wananavu or is their dive shop over on Nananu?  Is there gear storage available or did you have to schlep your gear back and forth to the boat daily?  If we are going to be diving 8 days this is important!  Some of those bures are up on a hill and that could get old very quickly.
Also, the trip out to Bligh Waters you said was 45min or more and bouncy.  Is it rough once you get there or was is calm?  Just wondering how an hour surface interval would be on a bouncy boat.

thanks!

Robin,

Kai Viti is right next door/attached to Wananavu - Once we cehcked in they had us put our dive bags on our porch and they came and got them, and at the end of our diving they brought them back.

For the most part we had "calm" seas for our surface intervals, plus the boat is decent sized so small chop and such wasn't an issue.

thanks everyone for your help.....
I think we have decided on Wananavu/Kai Viti Divers.    All the other resorts sound fantastic (Kadavu, Garden Island, Nananu, Beqa) and I am sure we would have a great time at any of them.
So I think is going to come down to availability at the resort for the weeks we are interested.  Honestly, I wish we could afford to do a week at each!

FIJI - is it safe there (after military coup)?

I'm planning to go to Fiji in May, and I'm just wondering if last month's military coup makes it less safe to travel there.  Anyone been there in recent weeks?

I'm guessing that since tourism is such a big part of Fiji's GDP, they're trying to keep things "business as usual," but I read that flight bookings are down 40%, so obviously a lot of folks are staying away.   I'd just like to hear whether that's really warranted or not...

Bruce, try checking http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html.  I don't see any warnings on Fiji but was unable to open the consular sheets due to sex education topics being blocked by my parental control which I don't know how to turn off.  Parental control keeps our computer from going out to porn sites on it's own like it did when it caught a virus once  .

What part of Fiji are you going to?

There is still a warning for Suva.  You can find the updated State Department page at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3073.html.

However, my travel industry information resources are saying as far as tourists go, especially if you're heading out on a liveaboard or just transiting Nadi heading to a resort, likely you won't encounter issues, but stay abreast of the situation and be vigilant.

We were originally going to stay at the Nadi Westin (using Starwood points), but after getting some feedback from divers who've been there (i.e., that there isn't very good diving around Nadi, and it's MUCH better up North), I've decided to stay at Wananavu, which is on the same island, but up at the Northern tip near Rakiraki. It looks like a beautiful little resort, and apparently has excellent diving within an hour's boat ride.

Bruce - You'll enjoy Wananavu and Kai Viti Divers.  We were there about 15 months ago and had a great time.  There should be some information earlier on this thread as Robin was asking questions awhile back.

Have a great time Todd!  Nai'a has a really great crew.  We really enjoyed their new hostess, Sonia.  If you mention to them you won the trip at NCUPS they may mention they had another customer from an NCUPS win last Oct........ that would be me  .

Thanks for the advice Chuck  .  I asked and got shown how to turn it off!  Even got told the password!  Of course the whole idea to put the parental control on in the first place was my idea  .  Now I can go out to the porn sites if I want but the computer can't go without me  .  !

I'll do a little bump on this one, since I had such fond memories of the Fiji!

4 or 5 years ago we had a trip to Kadavu, staying with www.divekadavu.com (aka Matana Beach Resort) and had a fantastic time.  The diving varied between good and stellar, and they got us to the South side of the island for some dives with the mantas.  The corals and wildlife were all in great shape, everywhere we dived.

We got in 2 or 3 dives per day depending on the profiles (no Nitrox available), and I must have shot 1200 or 1300 photos on that trip, frequently without a strobe.

We had another group headed down there right after the 'political unrest', and they didn't have any issues on Kadavu or at the end of the trip when they were shopping in Nadi before returning home.  I gathered that the upheaval was looked upon almost amusedly by the locals... from what I recall, one of the parties didn't show at one of their larger meetings, so the other party voted 'em out of office or some such.    Too bad we can't do that to the political slugs here in the US that never show up for Congress or Senate meetings.
