Rick,

It's a while since I've been but I can strongly recommend  http://www.fisheyeofcayman.com/ and I am sure they will still be able to point you in the right direction for the good bars and food.

Cheers,

Jim A

Ocean Frontiers out on the East End.  I think they also have some wave stuff now as well.  And if I'm not mistaken they recently sent out a "deal" email.
We're been diving with them for 15 years.  You can stay right on the property in one of their condos.  Get a car.  There are several large grocery stores nearer Georgetown that are quite nice.  Plenty of restaurants for whatever you might like. It is an hour or so from town.  Great operation.

Hello-

Ted-  I have looked at Ocean Frontiers/ The Kite house, but was thinking it was on the windward side of the island, good for kiting, but wouldn't be as good for diving?  Is there a house reef/ beach diving at Ocean Frontiers or mostly sand and sea grass?  A couple of friends are going to be at Ocean Frontiers for about 5 days of my trip.  I was planning on doing some diving with them but an hour each way from 7 mile is quite a drive, maybe I'll have to split my lodging between town and the east side?  I also assumed that the drive between town and the east sound would be like 30 minutes.

Jim- Looks like it's been a while since Fisheye updated there site, I'll email them.  It looks like they are on 7-mile beach.

Thanks- Rick

Rick,
The diving at the east end is IMHO far superior to the west.  There is much less boating out east and it hasn't been dived as much.  There is not really a house reef anywhere on Grand Cayman with the possible exception of the Turtle Farm and a couple of spots between Sunset House and Eden Rock.  Most diving is boat diving.  My estimate of drive time is just that.  It depends on which way you are going.  In the mornings there is considerable traffic from east into town and vice versa in the evenings.  The same is true if you are going from up Seven Mile Beach through town out to the east in the morning.  Somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes  depending on where on Seven mile beach you are going.  It's not really a big thing, but there is traffic.

If I'm not mistaken, Mike (who owned Fisheye and produced the great VHS tapes of how to use a Nikonos 5 in the late '80s and early '90s sold out several years ago and moved to New Zealand. I don't remember them being in the location that they had the last time i was there in 2005.

The Turtle Farm is a very nice and easy shore dive.  Just below the drop off there is a patch of coral.  One day it housed three eels and all sorts of other stuff.  Just go down and let them come to you.

Say Hello to Steve Broadbelt and Moe and Fraser from BarbaraJ and me.  They've known us for a long time.  If you want an unusual dining experience get them to tell you about the Austrian chef's garden.  I can't remember his name.

Ted -- I've been to Barbados 3 times, not as many dive operators as other islands but some very enjoyable dive sites with healthy reef and a nice wreck. I can give you more details when I'm home towards the end of next week.

Looking forward to it.  We've decided to go to Grenada this spring, but after having done alot of looking around I think Barbados is high on the list for next spring.

Key Largo - operators, accommodation?

We're considering a trip to Key Largo the first or second week of July. If you've been diving in this area, can you recommend a dive operator? And any suggestions for accommodation?

Thanks!

Duncan,

Seadwellers in Key Largo  http://www.sea-dwellers.com/.  They have a deal with a local motel chain.  Nice people.
