I have a timeshare at the Melita. It is VERY far north of town.  You will need a car or take a cab because most dive operators don't pick up north of town. The beach is nice and I understand that a drift dive from the pier south of the resort north to the end of the resort property is very nice but I have never done it.

I am a fan of the big slow boats that take you to the standard locations. The reason is very simple. They are awesome dives. My operator, Aqua Safari, is very competent and very cautious. The boat will be there when you surface. Why? Well, as opposed to a small boat, the captain on a large boat sits well above the water. It is a LOT easier to see bubbles and people in the water from high up. My favorite reef is Paradiso. I can do it any afternoon after a 2 tank dive for $9. That makes a total of $64 for a 3 tank day. [About normal]

My impression of Cozumel is that their are lots of good operators and lots of bad ones. Most of the diving horror stories I have heard are from Cozumel.

We return to Cozumel 4/16-4/23.

Regards,

Tom

Seems like most posts cover Cozumel - I am headed to Cancun and was looking for any recent reports or recommendations for dive operations.  I did see the family post for cancun - how about any other operations besides solo buceo or Manta?

Any must see dive sites or locations to hit.  I only have 1 or 2 days of diving max and will try to dive the entire day.  I have been to cozumel and barracuda reef - hopefully cancun will offer some excellent diving as well.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm assuming that since you mention Solo Buceo and Manta that you've already read my trip report from last July, so I won't cover them again.

But, I can't give enough props for Solo Buceo, staff was great and they went over and above to get us in the water with Whale Sharks.

.....other people's recommendations of their favorite dive operation/hotel.  ....
Also curious to hear if anyone has ever rented a condo/house for a week or more instead of staying at the hotels.

Thanks.

Here's the three dive ops I recommend:

1.) Dive with Martin  www.divewithmartin.com  Iv'e been using them for a few years now and have been very happy, 6-pack fast boats, very good DM's and captains, some of the best prices on the island and give free night dives and videos with multi-dive packages.

2.) Blue XT Sea  www.bluextseadivers.com  Christi runs a top notch dive op, very good customer service, 6-pack fast boats and also very well thought of DM's and captains.

3.) Bottom Time Divers  www.bottomtimedivers.net  Raul Plates used to work for Blue Bubble and now has his own operation. I have dove with him MANY times with the old dive op, he's Very safety minded and is reall good at finding those elusive critters.

Places close to town to stay depend on what your looking for,
Blue Caribe is very well thought of by many divers, small, no-frills hotel with very good rates.

Hotel Cozumel is more resort style with both all-inclusive and non-AI packages, beautiful large pool area with 3 story hotel surrounding it.

the new and improved Plaza las Glorias now called the Cozumel Palace is the newest AI on the island, it has gotten really good reviews although it has only been open for a couple of months.

as far as houses and condos, haven't done that yet but have started to check into it some, it looks like booking through real estate agents is the best way to do it. here's a condo that has gotten some good reviews on the ScubaBoard http://www.cozcondo.com/

hope this helps!!

Let's all hope for the best for the people of Cozumel.  The eye of Wilma is over the island right now, a direct hit, 15o mph winds, 25-35 foot waves (per Weather Channel.)

Hello all Divers
I'm Georg and I'm new to the Digital Diver. I looked through some of the reports and add's and I like it.
Just two weeks ago I was in Mexico and I went diving in Puerto Aventuras with Dive Aventuras and I like everybody to know that the diving is fantastic.
Some divers seem to think that after the hurricane's the Riviera Maya is not good anymore but I can for a fact that it is as beautiful as it was before.
Yes, some damage was done but it is part of nature.
So if anybody is thinking to do a short trip I can only recommend Dive Aventuras. There professionalStaff and the complete dive operation is top. Give it a try and you will not be disapointed.
I just wish I would have taken my Nikon D100 for a good shot of the whaleshark and all the other beautiful creatures.
Maybe next time.

Hi everyone, I just booked our Cenote/Cavern Diving with Dennis of Diablo Adventures for the Labor Day Weekend. We are booked for the Dos Ohos, and Bat Cave Cenotes... has anyone dealt with Diablo Adventures before?

I am also planning on taking my Ikelite d200, but dont know what lens to bring for cavern/cenote diving... I have the 12-24mm, 17-35mm and 60mm nikons... thanks.

And how crazy is it during Labor day weekend in Playa del Carmen, Cancun? Is it overcrowded? Rowdy?

Me and my wife are going to be in Cancun. We are wanting to get in a few dives while we are there. Does anyone know of any good dive operations in Cancun.  I have heard of Aquaworld, Manta Divers, and Nautilus Divers but I haven't been able to find much info about them.  I think Aquaworld takes out very large groups, if that is true we will probably not use them.  If anyone knows anything about these operators or can recommend any others please let me know.

If you want to spend a day on it, one option would be take the bus ride to Playa, then take the ferry across to Cozumel for two or more dives?
