Hi,

Had a fantastic opportunity to snap some whale sharks, but most of the photos turned out like this one, with lots of "snow".

I was shooting a canon 20d, tokina 10-17 (at 13mm), 1/250 shutter priority, behind a 8 inch plexi dome (aquatica). Natural light.

Yes, the water was full of particles, that's why the shark was there, but the pros somehow manage to not let it into their photos..

What am I doing wrong?

Cardboard box with a pinhole. Zip-lock bag housing camoflauged with letuce scraps to look like sea-weed. Dual "bic" strobes with adjustable flame.

I've never seen a whale shark, but the only thing I can think of is to get closer.

Yes, getting closer always helps (you see less particles), but if you were shooting natural light, that natural light was lighting up the particles in the water....not strobes. I'm not sure you can do anything (other than photoshop) with the particles. I have see times when the sun is behind large subjects I get less particles in natural light, but I attribute that to the large subject casting it's Shadow which eliminated the sun from "lighting up" those particles. Also, the deeper you get the less you will see the particles (also less sun to light up your subject.)
I'm far from a pro so this advice is "Just my experience", your mileage may vary

Thanks, Brant and Fisheye.

Next time I get to snorkel with something big I'll try closer and pay more attention to the sun's position.

Not sure about depth, though. I have some more pictures I took when I duck-dove to ~5 meters, they also are snowy.

Yeah there's not a whole lot you can do with marine snow. Its a nightmare for strobes and WA. Shots that look great on a 2.5 LCD usually come out awful. Close is king. I once had someone tell me when you think you're close, get closer. BTW...you can absorb some snow by simply adjusting sliders in PS that control the white balance.

Nice photo.  Congratulations on getting a shot without having a snorkeler in the picture.

I think the "Pro's" use photoshop to clean up images before they show them off.

I'm inclined to agree, although there are other solutions, but they all require post processing to get rid of the backscatter.

Actually that is one hell of a nice shot if you clean it up and bring out the sun rays.
