Depth of field tables For the Olympus c-5050z, c-4040z, and c-3040z Digital Cameras |
|
Here are depth of field tables, computed specifically for the Olympus Camedia C-5050Z, C-4040Z, and C-3040Z cameras (all three have the same lens). Tables of the hyperfocal distance are at the end of the page. Note: tables for C-3020Z, C-3000Z, C-3030Z, and C-4000Z may be found in another document. You may find these useful for other digicams as long as their actual-to-equivalent focal length ratio remains close to 1:5 (for example, an 8 mm lens equivalent to a 40 mm focal length on a 35 mm camera). For comparison, I'm showing also the depth of field for an equivalent (same angle) lens on a 35 mm camera. Each table shows the range values of depth of field (in meters) for a given subject distance ("s") setting and a given focal length, "F[eq]", in the customary, 35mm-equivalent terms). The column marked "C-5050Z" applies also to other cameras listed in the title of this page. Please also note that I didn't bother with computing the values for aperture values out of the standard series (like F/1.8 or F/2.6). This is just not worth the time: use the nearest value shown in the table. |

The following tables show DOF limits for 20 cm; on Olympus cameras this is as close as you can come still being able to change the focal length. I'm not showing the numbers for the 35 mm format, as the depth of field is very shallow there: at 35 mm, F/22, you get only 2mm or so in either direction. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Notes:
|
| The hyperfocal distance |
| And here is the table of the hyperfocal distance (in meters) for the C-5050z. The focal lenghts shown in the table correspond to those which can be explicitly set from the My Mode settings menu. The table is applicable also to any cameras of the same sensor size. |
| F/ | F[eq]=35mm | F[eq]=55mm | F[eq]=80mm | F[eq]=105mm |
| 2.0 | 4.0 | 9.9 | 21.0 | 36.2 |
| 2.8 | 2.9 | 7.1 | 15.0 | 25.8 |
| 4.0 | 2.0 | 5.0 | 10.5 | 18.1 |
| 5.6 | 1.4 | 3.6 | 7.5 | 12.9 |
| 8.0 | 1.0 | 2.5 | 5.3 | 9.1 |
| 11.0 | 0.7 | 1.8 | 3.8 | 6.6 |
| Thus, for example, if our zoom is at the wide end (F[eq]=35mm), we can set the camera to the aperture priority at F/4.0 with the distance preset to 2m, and shoot assured that everything from one meter to infinity will be within focus. Quite amazing, and useful in some applications, where we want to avoid the delay due to autofocus. At longer focal lengths smaller apertures (greater F-numbers) have to be set in order to use this approach — look at the table and decide for yourself. |
