Digital Diver Maldives '09

Maldives Aggressor Just so you don't get bored with the same old destinations, we're off to a totally new Digital Diver destination aboard the newest boat in the Aggressor Fleet, the Maldives Aggressor!

Join a select group of your Digital Diver friend for this adventure in the 1,190 coral islands southwest of India and just south of Sri Lanka, which compromise the Maldives.

Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem-like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise.

Although many languages are spoken in the Maldives (including English), "Dhivehi" is the common, ancestral language among the natives. Hera are some terms you will quickly learn about "kandus", "farus", "giris", and "thilas".

These are actually the local names for different types of underwater formations:

  • Kandus are deep channels between atolls and "islets" in the island nation of the Maldives. These are also very popular dive sites with steep walls and abundant marine life.

  • Farus are large, circular reef structures found within the atolls.

  • Giris are smaller reef structures found inside the atolls.

  • Thilas are known in the rest of the diving world as pinnacles or seamounts, and are rich with fish and pelagics.

Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming with abundant varieties of marine flora and fauna, fascinate visitors as they have for thousands of years.

The Maldives features 3 distinctly different types of wall and reef diving; inside the atolls, outside the atolls and inside the channels or passes with large schools of White Snapper, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, and Sharks. Mantas and Whale Sharks are commonly seen year-round in the crystal clear waters with temperatures ranging between 78 and 84 degrees.

Maldives Aggressor
The word Maldives translates to “Realm of Thousand Islands” with only 200 inhabited islands allowing the new Maldives Aggressor to reach new unexplored areas.

One thing we've gleaned from prior DD events is that everyone learns more, learns faster, and has more fun from peer interaction than they ever could in a classroom, and this trip will be no exception. As with all Digital Diver events, you will get to meet, dive and shoot with the Digital Diver crew and forum members, and learn from your interaction with them, while enjoying the amazing marine creatures of the Indian Ocean!

The Boat:

The new all steel motor sailer, Maldives Aggressor, is currently under construction in Bordum, Turkey and will be launched in September, 2007, beginning charters in 2008.

The Maldives Aggressor will feature a 55' dive tender known in the Maldives as a "dhoni". A dhoni is more than a tender, it is a separate dive vessel that accompanies the liveaboard. Dive gear is stowed on the dhoni, tanks are filled on the dhoni and easy water entry/exits are all done from the dhoni. What a concept!
